Bed Bugs

Why bed bugs show up

Bed bugs do not come from dirty homes. They travel on people, and they live where people rest. They hitchhike in luggage, backpacks, used furniture, mattresses, clothing and bedding, and spread through hotels, apartments, dorms, shelters and even offices and movie theaters. A single pregnant female can start an infestation, and the problem is often discovered only after a few weeks, when bites and stains appear.

They feed on blood, usually at night, and hide close to where you sleep. Bites often go unnoticed at first, and reactions vary, so some people have none at all. Because the signs are easy to confuse with other bites, confirming the insect matters.

Common species in Alabama and Georgia

The common bed bug is the species found across the region. Adults are flat, oval, reddish-brown and about the size of an apple seed. Nymphs are smaller and pale until they feed. Bat bugs and swallow bugs look similar and can be mistaken for bed bugs, but they live in bird or bat roosts and need different treatment. Proper identification is the first step, and we can help confirm what you are dealing with.

How we treat bed bugs

Bed bugs are hard to eliminate without a professional approach. We start with a thorough inspection of mattresses, box springs, bed frames, headboards, nightstands, upholstered furniture and baseboards, then treat where the bugs hide and travel. You get a preparation checklist, such as washing and drying bedding on high heat and reducing clutter.

Bed bugs often need more than one visit, because eggs and survivors can appear after the first treatment. We schedule follow-up inspections and adjust the plan based on what we find. Consistent preparation makes a real difference.

Prevention tips

  • Inspect hotel rooms, especially mattress seams and headboards, before unpacking.
  • Keep luggage off the bed and floor, and use a rack away from the wall.
  • Wash and dry travel clothing on high heat when you get home.
  • Inspect secondhand furniture and mattresses before you bring them in.
  • Reduce clutter around beds and seal cracks and crevices near them.
  • Use mattress and box spring encasements to remove hiding places.
  • If you discard an infested item, label it clearly so no one else brings it home.

Bed Bugs FAQ

Do bed bugs mean my home isn't clean?

No. Bed bugs feed on blood, not crumbs or clutter, and they turn up in spotless homes and hotels alike. They usually arrive in luggage, used furniture or visitors' belongings.

Can I get rid of bed bugs myself?

Bed bugs hide in tiny cracks and can go months without feeding, so do-it-yourself sprays rarely reach them all. A professional inspection and treatment plan, with follow-up, gives you the best chance of getting rid of them.
